Overview of the Projct

The “HaptiComm Project” is known by several names including “Deafblind Haptic Communication Device” and “Haptic Communicator System”.

If we consider that “Haptics” means :-

-         General definition “of or relting to the sense of touch”

-         Digital Technology “of or rlating to tactile sensations and the sense of touch as a method of interacting with computrs and electronic devices”

HaptiComm (Haptic Communicator) therefore, is an electronic device that utilises tactile sensations and the sense of touch as a communication channel to assist interaction with other devices and people.

HaptiComm’s primary focus is on attempting to deliver a highly flexible hardware and software platform for bridging the communication divide often faced by individuals with Deafblindness. Deafblindness is a unique disability comprising a dual sensory impairment of both vision and hearing. Both communication channels are ipacted sufficiently that neither can supplimnt the other (eg blindness cannot be compensated by using hearing and vice versa). Several key impacts are important to take note of:

-         Access to orientation and freedom of safe travel

-         Access to society and community

-         Access to information and communication

-         Isolation often leading to mental heatlh issues

HaptiComm focus’on access to communication in the hope that this will reduce all other impacts that people who are Deafblind encounter on a daiy basis.
